ONE EARTH - ONE OCEAN
The environmental organization One Earth – One Ocean e.V. (oeoo) has developed the so-called “Maritime Waste Collection” to rid waters around the world of plastic waste, oil and chemicals and to recycle the materials.

One Ocean e.V. (oeoo) I Garching I 2011
The environmental organization One Earth – One Ocean e.V. (oeoo) has been working on water and coastal protection since 2011. Since 2018, oeoo has been an official partner of the UN environmental campaign #CleanSeas.
Problem
Every year, more than 10 million tons of garbage end up in the world’s oceans, about 75% of which is plastic. Thus, there are now more than 150 million tons of plastic waste in the oceans. Plastic waste has a lifespan of up to 450 years and ultimately also enters our food chain as microplastic through the food intake of fish.
Solution
Oeoo treats plastic waste from the sea as a recyclable material. Using special garbage ships, oooe collects plastic in coastal areas and estuaries, which is then sorted by type and processed into plastic bales for reuse. In this way, plastic waste is removed from nature before it breaks down into microplastics or sinks into the depths, damaging the environment for centuries to come. Oeoo has verified its concept through a feasibility study and is currently active in 11 countries worldwide with 14 boats.
Why we support the project
Oeoo uses well thought-out and scientifically proven measures to reduce the problem of plastic waste in an uncomplicated and efficient way. The association collects and recycles plastic from the oceans in a sensible and diverse way, so that new opportunities are also created for the original problem. In addition, oeoo relies on the employment of local staff and cooperation with local partner organizations.

In addition, oooe relies on the employment of local staff and cooperation with local partner organizations. Currently, the association’s administrative costs are below 10% (January 2023 request). Due to the workload of some large projects, the percentage will increase to about 15% in the course of 2023, because the oooe team is continuously developing its boats and the recycling process.
